Hurricane Island Expedition

Hurricane Island Expedition

Sun, Aug 01, 2021 - Sat, Aug 07, 2021  (7 days)
  Ages: 12 - 15

Join veteran sailor and navigator Nathan on a week-long expedition to the most unique and historic small island in the middle of the ocean! Rising early at Kroka village we’ll travel  to Rockland, Maine, and then by ferry to Vinalhaven island. From here, we’ll row traditional wooden boats to our new home on Hurricane Island, and establish a wilderness camp amidst the ruins of an abandoned 19th century stone-cutters village. Our mornings will be spent exploring the secrets and mysteries of the island:  marveling at diverse plants and animals of the intertidal zone, pulling up lobster traps, taking samples on a working scallop research farm, and working in the laboratory to reveal the invisible intricate details of the marine ecosystem. In the afternoons we'll explore the island:  rock climbing in an oceanside granite quarry, swimming and rowing in the cold deep waters of Hurricane  Sound, and joining the island community for service projects in the gardens and on the trails. As the week progresses, the many secrets of the island will begin to reveal themselves, pulling you and your new friends deeper and deeper into the spell of this bold and magical place.

Kroka is pleased to offer this new program in partnership with the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership.
