EASTERN HELLBENDER SEMESTER

Fall 2026: Ages 18-23

For gap-year, college, and post-college students

The Eastern Hellbender is the largest species of aquatic salamander in North America. These delicate creatures are sensitive to changes in the environment, making them key indicators of ecosystem health. There is much we can learn from these special beings – and much that is still unknown about them.

We are building a new semester program for the fall of 2026.

Like the hellbender, the details are mysterious for now – but soon it will all be revealed.

The answers are woven throughout the deep folds, histories and communities of the Appalachian Mountains: to live beyond sustaining the status quo and reach for thriving possibilities for communities, nature and ourselves.

  • Are you so curious about how to live in right relationship with the world that you can’t just sit in a classroom, you have to go and do it?
  • Do you want adventure on an expedition that is not just physical, but intellectual and spiritual?
  • Are you are seeking practical skills and knowledge that can be applied to doing real work in the world?
  • Are you are on an educational journey: a gap-year, college alternative, or post-college exploration?
  • Do you have a strong desire to live in community with others and to connect meaningfully with nature and place?

If so, this semester is for you!
