KROKA TODAY

Challenge, Connection, Reverence, Engagement

More than 1,000 students come to Kroka each year for our unique curriculum of authentic community, outdoor adventure, and sustainable living.  Our three types of programs welcome students from age 8 – 21:  INTRODUCTION: 4th through 8th graders from local public and independent schools who spend their first ever evening around a campfire in the forest – IMMERSION: middle-school adolescents on a remote three-week wilderness expedition during the summer months – PASSAGE: high-school and college students embracing five months of rigorous human-powered travel and academic studies with small cohort of their peers.

Thanks to support from the NoVo Foundation and the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, our capstone full-circle semester programs in 2025 and 2026 were offered tuition-free to Kroka students who had demonstrated extraordinary effort, potential, and a genuine need for this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Each cohort spent two months traveling north by skis and showshoes through the winter wilderness before gradually re-engaging with the modern world as they traveled home again in canoes and on bicycles.  The energy and ambition of this bold undertaking inspires our entire staff and student community – meeting our fundamental need to know that the possibility of courage and heroic struggle lives within reach of our own reality – (instead of just the video game console or movie screen).   You can read their story (in their own words) here, or listen to their voices in some brief reflecti0ns below:
